Meeting Recap 09.03.2008

Interested in Sony cameras and technology? Well then, we hope you attended this past Wednesday’s meeting!

Christopher Soltesz and Jim Bales gave us the low down on the newest and hottest cameras from Sony. They tag teamed the presentation with Paul Niehaus and Shawn Watts from ROSCOR- a company that specializes in providing technology solutions for professional companies like those of us in the videography business. If you would like to lease some equipment, give them a call and they can set you up with a variety of technology (www.roscor.com).

There is way too much information to present in a recap. To summarize, we heard all about the technology behind the EX1 and EX3 models from Sony that are some of the hottest new cameras out there (1/2″ type Three Full HD CMOS image sensors). If you’re interested in starting with an image that is true HD resolution at 1920×1080 pixels, these are the cameras for you. And with a price tag between $6,000-$8,000 respectively, it’s amazing that we have this kind of imaging available at this kind of price. These cameras are a tapeless recording technology utilizing the SxS PRO memory cards (these come in 8Gb and 16 Gb memory up to 70 minutes per 16 Gb card). The EX3 has an interchangeable lens capability and can be used as a shoulder mount with an adjustable shoulder pad and removable Cheek Pad.

They also discussed their HDV technology (1/3″ type Three CMOS image sensors) realized through the HVR-S270 (Full Size Shoulder Mount), and the Z7U which are essentially the same electronics but for different applications. The more run and gun shooters will like the compact size of the Z7U, and the studio people will like the HVR-S270.

It was a very informative meeting that helped continue last month’s discussions from the HD Camera Shoot-Out. We actually had a comparison among our members using the EX1, HVR-S270, Z1, and other manufacturers cameras.

MIVA is working on getting Canon and Panasonic to do similar product demonstrations at future meetings. Try to come to every meeting because they promise to be helpful and challenging with the goal of bringing all of us to the next level in our businesses.

Do you know of other videographers who might benefit from MIVA? Bring them along, their first meeting is at no cost. The more people joining who can help us offset the cost of bringing in speakers, the more we can all benefit and learn from each meeting.

See you next month!
